How to compress a PDF
Choose a compression mode
Use Recommended compression for structural optimization plus conservative JPEG recompression, or Lossless optimization to leave image quality unchanged. Metadata removal is optional and off by default.
Compare and download
Review original and output sizes, saved bytes, page count, mode, and recompressed image count. If the candidate is not smaller, keep the original instead.
Two focused compression modes
Lossless optimization resaves the document with PDF object streams. It does not change embedded image quality or dimensions. This can help documents with inefficient structure, but already optimized or image-heavy files may show little or no reduction.
Recommended compression includes that structural pass and recompresses only narrowly supported JPEG image objects at a conservative browser JPEG quality near 82. Image dimensions stay unchanged, and a replacement is used only when its encoded stream is materially smaller.
Unsupported images stay untouched
JPEG recompression is limited to 8-bit DeviceRGB or DeviceGray DCT image objects without masks, soft masks, image masks, complex color spaces, unusual Decode arrays, or unsupported filter parameters. Other image objects remain unchanged instead of being forced through a risky conversion.
Pages are never rendered into full-page images. Searchable text, vector artwork, normal page geometry, annotations, links, forms, and outlines remain structural PDF content where the document format allows.
Truthful results and document safety
Every run starts from the original selected file, so trying another setting does not repeatedly recompress an earlier result. The generated candidate is reopened and checked before download. If it is not usefully smaller than the source, the result is marked Already optimized and the original is preferred.
Removing standard document information and XMP metadata is an explicit optional setting. It is not presented as the main compression method. Any rewritten PDF invalidates existing digital signatures, and specialized proprietary extensions or unusual metadata may require review afterward.

Compress PDF FAQ
How much smaller will my PDF become?
It depends on the PDF. Image-heavy or scanned documents with eligible JPEG images can shrink substantially, while optimized, vector-heavy, or unsupported-image PDFs may change very little. No fixed percentage is guaranteed.
Does Compress PDF rasterize pages?
No. The tool does not turn complete pages into images. Text and vectors remain PDF content, and Recommended mode only considers strictly eligible embedded JPEG image objects.
What is the difference between Recommended and Lossless?
Lossless optimization changes document structure without changing image quality. Recommended mode adds conservative, same-dimension JPEG recompression for eligible images at browser JPEG quality near 82.
Will links, forms, and bookmarks remain?
Representative links, annotations, AcroForms, and outlines are structurally checked after saving and are preserved where the PDF structure allows. Unusual proprietary extensions and specialized metadata are not guaranteed to survive every rewrite perfectly.
What happens if the optimized PDF is larger?
The page reports Already optimized and recommends keeping the original. It does not present an equal, larger, or only negligibly smaller rewritten candidate as successful compression.
Can I compress a password-protected or signed PDF?
Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are rejected. A signed PDF can be processed when readable, but any rewritten copy invalidates the existing digital signature; the page reports this when a signature is detected.
Does removing metadata improve compression?
Usually only slightly. Metadata removal is an optional privacy-oriented setting and is off by default. The main compression work is structural optimization and, in Recommended mode, eligible JPEG recompression.
What are the Compress PDF limits?
One source PDF can be up to 50 MiB and 500 pages. Eligible JPEG processing uses conservative per-image and combined pixel limits, with lower limits on mobile or low-memory devices, and generated output is limited to 150 MiB.
