How to compress JPG and WebP images

Choose compatible images

Start at 80 or move the quality slider from 1 to 100. Lower settings usually reduce size further but can remove more visual detail.

JPG and JPEG compression

JPG and JPEG are names for the same photographic image format. This tool decodes the source and uses the browser’s native JPEG encoder at your chosen quality, preserving the displayed orientation and decoded width and height.

JPEG compression is lossy, so lower quality can reduce file size by discarding more image detail. Re-encoding an already compressed JPEG cannot restore detail and may not create a smaller file.

Static WebP compression

Static WebP images are re-encoded with the browser’s native WebP encoder. The tool verifies both encoder support and the returned WebP data instead of silently downloading another format.

WebP transparency is preserved by the canvas encoding path. Animated WebP is intentionally rejected because this lightweight workflow does not preserve animation frames.

Quality, size, and dimensions

The quality slider controls the balance between visual detail and file size for both supported formats. A lower number often produces a smaller result, while a high number may keep more detail but can be larger than the source.

Compression does not resize the image. Each result keeps the exact decoded dimensions. Use Image Resizer separately when reducing pixel dimensions is appropriate for your workflow.

When the original is already smaller

No quality value guarantees a smaller result. Content, source encoder settings, and existing optimization all affect the size. When re-encoding is equal to or larger than the source, the tool marks it as already optimized instead of reporting a compression success.

The re-encoded result remains available for an explicit comparison download, but the original file is recommended when it uses fewer bytes.

Why PNG is not supported here

PNG uses lossless compression and does not have a standard browser canvas quality control comparable to JPEG or WebP. Pretending the shared quality slider compresses PNG would be misleading.

This version therefore accepts only JPG, JPEG, and static WebP. A future PNG-specific optimization workflow would need separate behavior and validation rather than a silent conversion or ineffective slider.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Supported files are validated, decoded, and re-encoded locally with browser APIs. They are not sent to our server during this workflow.

Which image formats can I compress?

This version accepts JPG, JPEG, and static WebP images. It rejects other formats and animated WebP rather than silently changing the output type.

Why is PNG not supported?

Browser canvas encoding does not provide PNG with a dependable lossy quality control like JPEG or WebP. PNG optimization needs its own truthful workflow, so it is outside this version.

Will compression change image dimensions?

No. The result keeps the exact decoded width and height. Use the separate Image Resizer when you want to change pixel dimensions.

Will the compressed result always be smaller?

No. An already optimized source or a high quality value can produce an equal or larger result. In that case the tool recommends keeping the original.

What quality should I choose?

The default of 80 is a practical starting point. Lower values often make smaller files with more visible loss; higher values can retain more detail but use more bytes.

Does WebP transparency stay transparent?

Yes for supported static WebP files. The browser encoding path keeps alpha pixels, and the returned file is verified as WebP before download.

Can I compress several images together?

Yes. You can mix up to 20 valid JPG, JPEG, and static WebP files. They are processed one at a time to keep peak memory use more predictable.
