Convert JPG to WebP

JPG and JPEG are two filename extensions for the same photographic image format. JPEG is broadly supported and uses lossy compression, which makes it practical for photographs but can discard image information when a file is encoded.

WebP is commonly used for efficient web images and is supported by modern browsers and many current applications. It can often produce a smaller file than JPEG at comparable visual quality, but the result depends on the source image and selected quality.

The quality control changes how the browser’s native WebP encoder balances visible detail and output size. Lower settings generally create smaller files, while higher settings can retain more detail and require more bytes.

No quality value guarantees a particular reduction. An already optimized JPEG or a high WebP quality setting can produce a result that is similar in size or larger. The converter reports both sizes truthfully and still allows the valid WebP to be downloaded.

This tool changes the image format without resizing. Each WebP keeps the width and height produced by the browser decoder, including the visible orientation from supported JPEG EXIF metadata.

Converting an existing JPG or JPEG to WebP cannot restore detail that JPEG compression already removed. The new format can store the decoded image efficiently, but it does not make the source sharper or recreate missing information.

The converter uses browser-native canvas encoding and checks WebP support before processing. It also verifies that every result has the image/webp MIME type and a valid WebP container signature.

If a browser cannot encode WebP reliably, the tool shows an unsupported-browser message instead of silently downloading PNG or JPEG. All supported processing runs locally without an external conversion service.
