PNG uses lossless compression and is well suited to graphics, logos, screenshots, and images that need transparency. Its files can be relatively large, especially for detailed photographic content.
WebP can often store the browser-decoded image in fewer bytes while retaining an alpha channel. Output size still depends on the source pixels, image detail, selected quality, and browser encoder, so a WebP result is not guaranteed to be smaller.
WebP supports fully transparent and partially transparent pixels. This converter keeps the alpha information decoded from the PNG instead of filling it with white, black, or another background color.
The result preview uses a checkerboard surface so transparent and semi-transparent areas remain visible before download. Animated PNG files are rejected rather than silently converting only one frame.
The quality control adjusts the browser’s WebP encoder. Lower values often create smaller files with more visible loss, while higher values can retain more detail and use more bytes.
Converting a PNG to WebP does not create new detail or make the source sharper. It changes the way the existing decoded pixels are encoded and packaged.
This is a format converter, not a resizer. Every WebP keeps the width and height reported by the browser after decoding the PNG.
The workflow runs on your device with browser-native APIs. If the browser cannot produce and verify a real WebP file, the tool reports the limitation and does not substitute another format.

Yes. Fully transparent, semi-transparent, and opaque pixels remain represented in the WebP alpha channel instead of being flattened onto a background color.
No. Animated PNG files are detected and rejected so that an animation is not silently reduced to a single still frame.
Quality 80 is a practical starting point. Lower settings often reduce size further, while higher settings can retain more visual detail but may create larger files.
No. WebP can often be smaller, but the result depends on image content, the source PNG, your quality choice, and the browser encoder.
No. The decoded width and height stay unchanged, and conversion cannot add image detail that is not present in the original PNG.
The tool shows a browser-support error and does not download a PNG, JPEG, or other fallback file in place of WebP.
