How to crop an image

Choose one image

Add a static JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF file. Its real format, animation state, dimensions, and safety limits are checked locally.

Set the crop area

Drag or resize the crop box, select an aspect ratio, or enter exact X, Y, width, and height values in source pixels.

Crop and download

Create the result without resizing the selection, review its actual preview and details, then download or adjust the crop again.

Cropping removes pixels; resizing changes their scale

Cropping keeps a selected rectangular region and discards the pixels outside it. The output dimensions are therefore the crop width and height shown in source pixels. A 1,200 × 800 crop exports as 1,200 × 800 rather than being stretched to another size.

Resizing is a different operation that scales the whole image to new dimensions. Use Image Resizer when you need to make an entire picture smaller or larger, and use this cropper when you need to change framing or aspect ratio.

Free crops and common aspect ratios

Free mode lets width and height change independently. The 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 9:16 presets keep their proportions while you resize, which is useful for square profile images, landscape displays, and portrait posts.

Selecting a ratio starts with the largest centered crop that fits inside the source. Exact X, Y, width, and height fields provide a keyboard-friendly way to position or fine-tune the crop without relying on pointer precision.

Output formats and transparency

JPG and JPEG crops remain JPEG, PNG crops remain lossless PNG, and static WebP crops remain WebP. PNG and WebP alpha transparency is preserved. JPG has no transparency and uses a neutral preview surface.

Browsers can decode AVIF but do not provide dependable AVIF canvas encoding. AVIF crops therefore offer an explicit PNG or JPG output choice. PNG is the default and preserves transparency; JPG uses the chosen quality and background color.

Quality, orientation, and local processing

JPG and WebP output use a quality setting from 1 to 100, with 90 as the default. PNG is lossless and does not show a misleading quality control. A cropped file can be larger or smaller than its source depending on format, detail, and encoder settings.

The browser decoder applies supported JPEG orientation metadata before coordinates are mapped and pixels are drawn, so the crop follows the visible image orientation. Processing stays in the current browser tab and old preview URLs are released when results or source images are replaced.

Are my images uploaded?

No. File checks, decoding, crop mapping, encoding, previews, and downloads happen locally with browser APIs for this tool.

Can I crop to an exact pixel size?

Yes. Enter the crop width and height in source pixels, and use the X and Y fields to position the area. The tool exports those selected pixels without resizing them.

What is the difference between cropping and resizing?

Cropping removes pixels outside a selected rectangle and changes the framing. Resizing scales the entire image to different dimensions without choosing a smaller region.

Which aspect ratios are available?

You can use Free, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, or 9:16. Ratio presets stay locked while the crop area is resized.

Will PNG and WebP transparency be preserved?

Yes. Static PNG and WebP crops retain alpha transparency. AVIF exported as PNG also preserves transparent pixels supported by the browser decoder.

Why does an AVIF crop export as PNG or JPG?

Browsers do not expose dependable native AVIF canvas encoding. The tool makes the conversion explicit: PNG is lossless and transparency-safe, while JPG offers quality and background controls.

Can I crop animated images?

No. Animated PNG, WebP, and AVIF image sequences are rejected because exporting a single canvas frame would silently discard animation.

Does preview zoom change the output?

No. Preview zoom only makes the editing surface easier to inspect. Output dimensions always come from the selected source-pixel crop area.
